Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need any special skills or experience?
No, you do not need to have previous experience working with horses or people with disabilities. During volunteer training you will learn everything you need to know.

How old do I have to be to volunteer?
Volunteers working with riders or horses must be at least 14 years of age.  Upon approval of the Volunteer Director, children between the ages of 10 and 13 may volunteer in the barn or office.  Children under the age of 14 must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

Do I need a set schedule to volunteer?

While we encourage our volunteers to establish a schedule that enables them work consistently with the same client(s), it’s not required.  Many of our most experienced and valued volunteers have schedules that vary from week to week and they choose to volunteer as their schedule permits.

What if I don’t want to work in the arena? Are there other jobs that I can assist with?
Volunteers also assist with office administration, volunteer recruitment, fundraising and special events, and maintenance around the facility.

What if I have a group who wants to do a one-time work project?
R.O.C.K. is always in need of assistance with projects.  Please contact the Volunteer Department for more information.

What if I just want to volunteer as a Horse Handler?
Prior to becoming a Horse Handler, all volunteers must first complete TEN hours as a Side Walker.  This ensures volunteers fully understand how sessions are conducted and how the therapy team communicates during sessions.

How do I qualify for the Conditioning Team?
To qualify for the Conditioning Team (exercising the horses) volunteers must complete New Volunteer Orientation, Side Walker 101, Horse Prep 102, Horse Handler 103 and 203, and pass a written horse knowledge test.  After the volunteer has completed those steps, they will be eligible to take the riding test.

Are there any physical requirements to be a volunteer?
Volunteers must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk at a steady pace for 45 to 50 minutes and occasionally jog short distances.
